Commandant's Message for January & March 2024

Happy New Year to all. As we look forward to next year, we hope to get more members. I would encourage all members to bring in at least one or two new members. The membership forms have changed. I will have them at the next meeting and they are also being included in this newsletter. Please keep a copy in your cover so that you always have one with you.

We're also looking for new ideas for next year, one is to raise money and to help the American Legion Post as they have let us use their building for the last year and a half without payment.

The next meeting is January 11th at the American Legion. I will be giving out flyers at the VA trying to get more members to attend. The old forms may be rejected if they're used, so please make sure you're using the up-to-date form.

We will be completing the financial audit in January as soon as we get the information from the bank. Joe Motes has graciously continued to put the newsletter together. He will be making copies and mailing them out to those who do not have email.
He will also email all others the newsletter. This will save about $60 every 3 months.

Miss Kimberly LaPorte, the assistant chief of volunteer services at the Broward VA clinic, moved to North Carolina and resigned her position at the VA. She will be missed as she was doing a great job bringing in new volunteers and helping fellow veterans.

The DAV (Disabled American Veterans) has been helping veterans get the benefits that they've earned and deserve for years of service. There are about eight DAV members that assist veterans with getting better benefits. It is on a first come first served basis and they start at 10:00 a.m. and end at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday only. They meet at the American Legion in Pompano Beach, 171 Southwest 2nd Street. Make sure you bring your DD-214 and any medical records with you. They're there to help you and you deserve it.

PLEASE try to attend the meetings as it's important that we have a quorum to continue our business.

Thank you so much for your support in 2023!
HAVE A GREAT 2024 - START BY ATTENDING THE MCL MEETINGS.

Commandant's Message for October & December 2023

It has been a long year and we have survived without hurricanes, but had flooding in some areas. The Detachment is still strong and thriving. We want to encourage members to get more involved in the community by joining a booster club to support the Marine JROTC at Stranahan high school. This is a group of young high school students interested in joining the military and becoming the future — our future .

There are many events coming up, such as the Marine Corps birthday on November 10th and Veterans Day on November 11th .

We will celebrate the Marine Corps birthday at Sharky's in Coral Springs where we will have a delicious Buffet meal and “cutting of the cake” by the youngest and the oldest Marine in the building. We will have several military items that will be raffled off and also a 50/50. The next day is Veterans Day and there will be a special event for all veterans at the Tamarac City Park on Southgate and University. I hope to see all of you there to support the Marine Corps League in Tamarac. Remember, this is your group!

On December 16th, at noon, all members are invited to be present at Forest Lawn Cemetery on Copans Road in Pompano. We will be placing wreaths on the military grave sites that are premarked for us. Afterward, there will be a lunch sponsored by Mission BBQ at the main building for all in attendance. Thank you so much for your support of this program.

The holidays are coming up: Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas and then the beginning of the new New Year 2024 on the 1st of January. Please be safe during the holiday season and take extra caution when traveling or shopping.

Our next meeting will be the second Thursday, November 9th, at 7pm, the day before the Marine Corps birthday. Hope to see everyone there! Make plans to attend Sharky's and have a good time.

Commandant's Message for July & September 2023

I have been reelected as the district Vice Commandant for the southeast Florida district 10,  this includes Palm Beach, Broward, Dade ,and Monroe County.

I plan traveling to see and attend each Detachment meeting. Joe Motes, our Past Commandant will be moving to Jacksonville around August or September of this year, he will remain Detachment 755 webmaster and editor.

We will be honoring him at the September 14th meeting so plan on being there to honor him before he moves to Jacksonville area.

Elections were held last month and we will be swearing in the newly elected people the next meeting July 13th, see the meeting minutes of Nominees and election results.

This will be an important meeting please plan to attend in person if you need assistance in getting there please let me know, I will try to get you a ride.

Have a safe 4th of July and celebrate the freedom of our country, what we have earned what we have fought for and that belongs to us

I thank you for your service

Commandant's Message for April & June 2023

I hope we are all in good health as we come upon Spring. Another Vietnam Marine went on the Honor Flight on April 1, 2023. Gad had the honor to be on this flight. Gad and Joe have started selling hats again at the VA Clinic. We are also serving free coffee in the Vending area and, Yes, we need help from 7 am to 11 am any day of the week. We hope you can plan to organize your time so that you can help out. Please stop by.

We have had a few people under the weather. Smoke would like a call to cheer him up. I had neck surgery on March 29 and was told that I would have to wear a large neck brace for at least 6 weeks, 24 hours a day. It will limit my activities, since I will not be able to drive. Hopefully, I will heal quickly and be back to my normal routine sooner than expected.

The VA has started the PACT ACT to help Veterans get their Benefits from Vietnam, Kuwait, Desert Storm, Camp Lejeune, and Afghanistan Burn Pits. Now there is help provided at the VA. Bring your paperwork to start the process.

Commandant's Message for January & March 2023

I hope everybody enjoyed the holidays. Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah and Happy New Year to all the members to the Tamarac Detachment.

We've had a great couple of months with some activities such as Wreaths Across America at Forest Lawn Funeral Home & Memorial Gardens . Approximately 820 wreaths were laid on all branches of the service.

Thanks to Mission BBQ for feeding everybody at the end.

We are currently looking for volunteers at the VA, if you have time in the mornings as early as 7:00 to 9:00 or 7:00 to 12:00 we enjoy having you on Monday, Tuesday, or Friday as we enjoy hearing the stories from all the veterans while we escort them through the building.

The Detachment in Dania has been closed and they've lost their charter. I have sent out letters to all their members inviting them to join our detachment but have not heard much back from them. Most of them are older members and do not attend any meetings, which is one of the reasons why they closed, they could not get a quorum for their meeting. We're hoping to receive them  Open Arms if they wish to come to our detachment.

Remember the 2nd Thursday at 7pm our meeting. There may be a special gift for those that attend.

Commandant's Message for October & December 2022

The 99 th Marine Corps League Convention held in Daytona Beach, FL was a huge success. The weather was a little warm, however, over 600 attended and about 110 Devil Dogs were promoted to Pedigree Devil Dogs. This can only be done at the National Convention Growl. We learned about the League as part of the moving up process.

There were several off-site trips, including Daytona Speedway in the Diamond Lounge on the Finish Line 3 levels up. We had a great dinner. There was also a riverboat cruise which was very enjoyable. Over 110 went to the baseball game where all MCL personnel were recognized before the game. The women enjoyed a day trip to Saint Augustine.

The Banquet guest speaker was the Commandant of the Marine Corps and the Sargent Major of the Marine Corps. This was a great experience for all and we all will look forward to attending the 100 th National Conference in Oklahoma in August 2023.

We have almost made it through another hurricane season on the east coast. However, the west coast of Florida suffered major destruction from Hurricane Ian. There are several organizations soliciting money and supplies that will help in rebuilding. Please verify the legitimacy of the organizations before making donations.

The Tamarac MCL has been credited with donating $9,350.00 in bread to the VA in
Sunrise. We have been getting the bread and bakery product donations from Publix every Monday, Wednesday and Friday and then distributing these to the Veterans at the Sunrise VA. They have been very grateful for the help.

The Marine Corps 247 th Birthday is November 10, 2022. The Tamarac Detachment will be celebrating the Birthday at Sharkey's in Coral Springs, 10365 Royal Palm Blvd., from 7-11 pm. Special Note: We will be meeting Friday, November 11, not the 10 th

Commandant's Message for July & September 2022

I hope you all had a safe and happy 4 th of July I hope you.

I just attended the DOF Marine Corps League Annual Convention in Melbourne, FL. Tamarac MCL 755 was credited with 2,047 hours of Volunteer Service at the VA in Broward County and over $8,500 in donations. Most donations were bread and bakery products donated to the Tamarac MCL from Publix in North Lauderdale. One wheelchair and one walker were also donated to the Detachment. The chair and walker were donated to Veterans at a local church.

Intercoastal Detachment 1058 is inviting all Marines and families to their Marine Corps Birthday Ball at Hugh's Catering at 4351 NE 12 th Terrace, Oakland Park, FL at 7 p.m., November 5, 2022.

Tamarac Detachment 755 will be celebrating the 247 th Birthday at Sharkey's, 10365 Royal Palm Blvd., Coral Springs 33065 on November 10, 7 p.m.-12 Midnight. Free Food. We would like to invite ALL members to attend. Bring Uniforms (cover) Red shirts.

Devil Dogs Growl included a new position that was awarded to Tony Gutierrez as a District 6 Watch Dog. He will be responsible for the pounds in SE FL.

Our July meeting will be on the 14 th of July at the American Legion Hall at 7 p.m. Please try to attend in person. If you need a ride, call me to arrange someone to pick you up (954) 648-7887. I will do my best to get you a ride. I will not be attending due to the fact that I am having some hand and arm surgery.

August 31 st will be the next growl. It is important for you to attend as there will be pizza served.

I would like to thank Joe Motes for his attendance at the 21 JROTC presentations at the high schools in Broward County, awarding three MCL medals to the deserving students at each school. Jammie Toro and I assisted when there were multiple schools on a single day.

Commandant's Message for March & June 2022

COVID is almost over as most of us have received 2 COVID shots and 2 Boosters.

We have resumed meetings on the 2nd Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. at the American legion in Margate. Please join us on June 10.

We are now in hurricane season and need to make preparations. Remember to have cash, medicine, can food, water, gas in the car and generator, and gas for your grills. I sent everyone a list out last year. If you need it again, e-mail me at Diverplus@aol.com. I can e-mail the list back to you.

There are 29 JROTC programs in Broward County school system. At the end of each year Tamarac Marine Corps League Awards three students in each Battalion with a Marine Corps ribbon and bronze, silver, and gold metal for special achievement.

Joe Motes (Past Commandant) attends most all of the award ceremonies with help from Jamie Toro (Vice Commandant) and myself. At the end of the school year there is a Pass and Review of all the Battalions from the county. 15 students from each program represent each of the organization, scholarships are awarded to several students at the ceremonies. Our paymaster and past Commandant Joe Motes organize the food for all the students and photographs the entire events.  It is a proud day for all the JROTC Commanders.

The Vietnam mini wall which travels around the United States will be coming to Coral Springs sports park on November 4th 5th and 6th, I would like to see all numbers of the Tamarac Detachment attend in uniform. They're also looking for donations I will discuss this further at our next meeting

The national Marine Corps League is having the National Convention in Daytona Beach Florida in August. This is your chance to advance from devil dog to pedigree, they're looking for volunteers to assist with registration, Transportation, greeting and many other positions, if you are interested, please let me know.

Memorial Day is coming soon and I have listed some of the local ceremonies in the area:

May 30 - Memorial Day

Lauderhill - Veterans Park - 8:30 am

Plantation - Veterans Park - 9:30 am

Boca Raton - 9:00 am - 10:00 am

Enjoy the weekend and remember those who gave all.

Commandant's Message for January & February 2022

We had a great time at Sharkeys Raw Bar and Grill for the 246th birthday celebration. The food was great and plentiful along with the special Marine Corps cake. Angelo sold the 50/50 tickets, Joe Motes took photos of the group, and I read the letter from the USMC Commandant. All had a good time.

On Veterans Day our Sr. Vice Commandant Jamie Toro's name was added to the 12th panel of Veterans that live in Tamarac. I attended the Tamarac Veterans Day Ceremonies and represented the Tamarac MCL at a ceremony in Pembroke Pines and hosted the Veterans Day ceremonies in Lauderhill celebrating 15 veterans who live in Lauderhill.

COVID seemed to be on the increase during the holidays. Veterans can get their booster shots at the VA in Sunrise without an appointment and almost no waiting time.

We will be meeting on the second Thursday of the month by ZOOM and in person. We have plenty of room to practice social distancing. Please join us one way or another. We will send out a reminder.

The Department of Florida MCL will be hosting the 99th Annual Convention in Daytona Beach, FL in August 2022. This is an opportunity to upgrade to Pedigree. This can only be done at a National Convention. This also will give you the opportunity to attend a National Conference which rotates every year to a different state. There are several hotels with reasonable rates in the immediate area. Daytona has much to offer: beaches, race track experience, and much more.

We have much to look forward to in the coming year - rejuvenating programs and getting involved in community projects. Stay safe and healthy.

Commandant's Message for January & February 2021

We're saying goodbye to 2020 and welcome 2021. Hopefully, we will all be able to get back to our normal routines soon. To help us, vaccines are here at the VA in Sunrise. You have to call 877-743-3400. When they answer, push 2. That will take you to the appointment desk. You take it from there. Good luck. Remember to continue wearing your mask and using social distancing, even after getting the vaccine.

On a sad note, one of our older members, Lou Annacone, passed away a couple of months ago. We had a good turnout at the National Cemetery in Lake Worth for his funeral. The family was very grateful for the support and having the USMC Detachment as the honor guard to present the flag, play the taps, and perform the gun salute.

In other news, the Detachment purchased 15 wreaths for the Veterans buried at the cemetery in Pompano. Joe Motes and myself laid out about 20 wreaths each. This was my first time participating in this event, and it was an honor. Covid-19 kept a lot of people away. Hopefully, we will have a better turnout when Covid-19 is over, we all have out vaccines, and we're able to get together with less risk.

The State MCL is now looking at Spring for the State Meeting to take place somewhere around Orlando. I will keep you informed as time gets closer and, of course, depending on what is happening regarding the virus.

Until the number of Covid-19 infections drop down to less than 4%, we will continue using Zoom for our meetings. If you have a computer and have internet service, you should be able to get on our Zoom meetings. If you need help, please call me at (954) 648-7887. Hope to see you all on our next Zoom which takes place on January 14, 2021 at 7:30 pm.

Also, a Big Thank you goes out to Sharkey's for a great Marine Corps Birthday Party. The food was excellent and plentiful. There was a 3-tier cake with Marine Corps Logo on top and also some Cookies with the Marine Corps Logo. Joe Motes from our Detachment cut the cake with his Marine Corps Saber. The oldest Marine (78) and youngest started the celebration and the Marine Corps Hymn was sung by all. Angelo Norberto sold 50/50 tickets and the winning number took home $130. A $50 gift certificate from Sharkey's, the Marine Corps Emblem on wood, and a 5' circular tapestry of the Marine Corps Emblem were also given out as prizes. COVID-19 has kept many away, but everyone who attended wore their masks and kept others as safe as possible while having a Great night for the 245 th Marine Corps Birthday.

Commandant's Message for March & April 2020

We are now in the middle of the Flu Season. According to the CDC, there have been an estimate of 29 million people infected with the flu in the U.S., with approximately 16,000 deaths between October 1, 2019 and February 15, 2020. This is just in the U.S.

Now, we may be facing a pandemic of the Caronavirus. The U.S. has only 57 confirmed cases at this time. There is no vaccine or pharmacological treatment at this time. The Caronavirus has a higher fatality rate than the seasonal flu. Outcomes depend largely on age and any underlying health problems a patient may have.

The following are suggestions to help you protect yourself:

Separate yourself from those who are infected with the flu.

Call your Doctor's office to make sure that the lobby is clear of flu patients before entering the office.

Wear a face mask – if you have trouble wearing a face mask, have others around you wear a mask. As of Feb 26, the Sunrise VA is out of stock of face masks and they are backordered. If you need a mask, you may try to purchase one at the drug store or your doctor's office.

Cover your cough and sneezes with a tissue and then throw the tissue in a lined trash can. Be sure to wash your hands frequently, especially after coughing into them or touching objects that may be contaminated.

Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or use alcohol based hand sanitizer that contains 60% to 95% alcohol.

Avoid sharing personal household items, such as dishes, cups and utensils. Also clean these items with soap and hot water.

Clean countertops, doorknobs, bathrooms, phones and keyboards.

Symptoms can include fever, coughs, shortness of breath and you can expect the flu to last from 2 days or as long as 14 days.

Seek prompt medical attention if your illness worsens. Call your medical provider for advice and put a mask on before going to the office.

If you have an ad in the Rollcall, please check the date in your ad, as some of the ads have expired, please support us by renewing your ad. If you know of a business that would want to advertise with us with an ad, let them know about our detachment.

We definitely need new and young blood to join our Marine Corps League to insure our survival, so remember, if you meet a Marine, invite him or her to join the League.

Our goal for the next year is to increase membership and reunite with some older members. I am looking forward to the next year as I have some bright yellow footsteps to fill.

Commandant's Message for January & February 2020

Welcome to the new decade, 2020. As we leave 2019, we lost several members and we will cherish memories of them and what they have given us. As we look forward, we will be updating our By-Laws as requested by the National MCL. Our By-Laws have been updated to meet the national standards. Our biggest change is the meeting day for our monthly meeting. By-Laws stated that our meeting was on the 2 nd Wednesday and has been changed to the 2 nd Thursday of the month at 7:30 pm. The B-Laws have been sent to our Judge Advocate Tony Gurtierrez for proof reading and will be forwarded to DOF and National.

Our Flag poles have been repaired with a new Eagle and Spad on top. The carrying case was also made to carry both flags. They will be on display at the January 9 th meeting.

As we move into 2020, we need to plan our future and make sure our family knows our wishes when we aren't able to make our own wishes known. The best time to plan for your future is now. The right decision is your decision. Five Wishes is the living will that talks about your personal, emotional and spiritual needs as well as your medical wishes. The Five Wishes include:

1. The person you want to make medical care decisions for you when you are incapacitated.

2. Your choices of the kind of medical treatment you want or don't want.

3. The decision of how comfortable you want to be with or without medication.

4. How you want people to treat you when you are incapacitated.

5. What you want your loved ones to know.

These are just some things to think about when completing your plan if you are incapacitated and can't speak for yourself.

We are looking for a few good Marines to join our Detachment. When you meet fellow marines in your area or at an association meeting, make sure they know about us and invite them to the meeting. For our Devil Dogs, we have a meeting on January 29, 2020.

I would like to thank Cliff Handerhan and Ramon Aguiar for assisting at the Tamarac Veterans Day celebration and Angelo Norberto for setting up for the Marine Corps Birthday at Sharkies and collecting the 50/50 money for the Detachment totaling $160.00. Thank you.

We collected 14 boxes from the Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic church. Thank to Dale MacCutcheon our Adjutant who set it up and was there to collect items with Joe Motes, Anotnio Gutierrez, Cliff Handerhan, Angelo Norberto, and Pete Gannon. We had a great time and the Knights of Columbus fed us a pancake breakfast. Thanks to all for a great year!!

Come join us at the VA. Become a volunteer and spend 4 hours a week. You will enjoy the comradery and contact with other Vets. See myself or Joe Motes to get signed up.

Tamarac MCL Commandant assisted the Northern Colorado Detachment MCL 785 with their Toys for Tots Program, giving out hundreds of toys. Santa Claus, Characters from The Mermaid – Ariel and Moana from another Disney movie were all present to greet the children. A good time was had by all.

Commandant's Message for November & December 2019

As we approach the USMC 236 Birthday on November 10, we must remember all those who gave their lives for our freedom. When we returned from Vietnam, we were not greeted so well. Now, as we wear our USMC shirt or T-shirt and even our hats, people come up to us and thank us for our service. Our response is usually “You are Welcome.” How about thanking them with “Thank you for being such a great thankful American.”

On Sunday, November 10, please join us for the Annual Marine Corps Birthday at Sharkey's Raw Bar and Grill, 10365 Royal Palm Blvd., Coral Springs, from 7pm- ??

Monday, November 11, is Veterans Day and many cities will be having celebrations honoring Veterans. Please attend these in uniform or red polo with cover to represent the Tamarac Detachment 755.

I will be attending the City of Lauderhill celebration at Veterans Park, 7600 NW 50 Street on November 6 at 4 pm, and the City of Tamarac Park, 7825 Southgate Blvd. on November 11 at 10:30 am. Commemorative pins will be given out to all Vietnam Veterans. I would appreciate any help that can be offered. If anyone can volunteer to join me on these dates, please contact me at (954) 648-7887. We will also have a table set up to sign up new members.

The City of Plantation Fire Department is holding their 62 nd Annual BBQ on November 4, from 11 am to 4 pm at Pine Island Park (Pine Island and SW 3 rd Street). We will have a table to recruit new members and will need help manning the table. This is your chance to support the MCL Tamarac Detachment 755.

Thank you in advance for supporting your local MCL Tamarac Detachment 755.

Commandant's Message for September & October 2019

This note is to all non-life members: Paid-for-life dues may be going up to over $900 soon, and most likely the yearly dues will follow. Now is the time to get a PFL membership before the price goes up sometime after September 2019.

I have a few ideas for fundraisers, but I will need your assistance. We need to raise money to assist those who need help in paying their life-membership dues, or to send additional members to attend conferences, or to even send additional members to the National Convention in Daytona in 2020.

One idea that has worked out for other Detachments is to sell Poppy Flowers in front of Publix. We could also sell them at the Broward Coalition Expo held on October 12, 2019 or at the Plantation Firefighters Picnic on November 3, 2019 where over 4,000 residents attend each year. Additionally, the flowers could be sold on Veterans Day during the special events held in various cities in our district. We already have the Poppy Flowers – but we need help from the members selling them.

Please think of volunteering your time for this fundraiser or any other fundraiser that we can add to the list.

At the next meeting, we will include time for members to present any other ideas for fundraisers when we discuss “New Business.”

I am hoping that you will each find time to assist in this endeavor. If we can raise enough money to send additional members to these conferences, it would be a great time to fellowship together and represent our Detachment.

Thank you.

Commandant's Message for May & June 2019

As of May, there will be a change of command at the MCL Tamarac Detachment 755. Commandant Joe Motes, who served for the last 6 years, is stepping aside. We are so grateful to Joe for his leadership, knowledge and wisdom. He took over when we were experiencing difficult times.

The Detachment, at present, has 100% of dues paid up and is sending representatives to local, state, and the Southeast Conferences. The Detachment is active in the VAVS program, Senior Olympics, Flag Program, and Commemorative Vietnam War Pins with over 250 pins being issued to Vietnam Vets at Memorial Day and Veterans Day Ceremonies and the VA. The Detachment has also gained new members, but we have also had some great Marines move on to their new duty assignment with the Supreme Commandant.

Commandant's Message for March & April 2019

The following is from Charles Schneider, 10th District V.C.: There are three Detachments in the State of Florida who show that all of their members' dues have been paid. I'm proud to say that two of those detachments are in our District and even prouder to give you Kudos for being one of them. Job well done and thank you for all you do.

In February our detachment started the nominations for election of officers, and after 6 years as Commandant I will not be running, we do have some new blood who are wanting to step up and see that our detachment will continue to prosper.

This month we start the JROTC school awards, and I look forward to some of you Marines to help present them.

Again this past year postage went up another two cents, if you can read our Rollcall Newsletter online, please let me know so we can drop your mailing and save on postage and printing.

If you have an ad in the Rollcall, please check the date in your ad, as some of the ads have expired, please support us by renewing your ad. If you know of a business that would want to advertize with us with an ad, let them know about our detachment.

We definitely need new and young blood to join our Marine Corps League to insure our survival, so remember, if you meet a Marine, invite him or her to join the League.

Commandant's Message for January & February 2019

Also, starting late next month we will begin the presentation of JROTC awards at the 29 high schools in Broward County, but there are about 10 schools in the northern part of the county, there is nothing more meaningful to a cadet than to receive their awards in person by a Marine.

Commandant's Message for May & June 2015

The last four months have been difficult for our Detachment with the theft of our money in December. In January it was further discovered that the annual dues for ten of our members had not been paid for the past two years. In one member's case, dues had not been paid for three. As a result, I immediately made payments of $445 to renew and make their memberships current. I sincerely apologize to these ten members. Since issues of Semper Fi were not received during this time, I requested that back issues of this magazine be sent to them. While I was told that only a limited number of back issues were kept, they did agree to investigate.

In the past month I have attended the S.E. Division Conference in Orlando and the Department Spring Conference in Safety Harbor. Since the topic discussed at both events has been detachments and theft, apparently, we have not been the only one infected with this problem.

Now we move forward! I am pleased to say that we are off to a good start. Please check your ads, your PLM's, your Boosters, and your membership renewals. If they are past due, please help us by catching up on these dues.

In the past two years we had to scale back on our biggest program, our JROTC program, if our finances keep improving, I would like to get it back up and running as in the past.

Luckily we have been doing great with the Department of Florida with the Eagle Scout program, we keep leading most of the detachment in Florida with Eagle Scout certificates issued.

Remember, if you meet a Marine, invite him or her to join the League.

Commandant's Message for March & April 2015

This year we got off to a rocky start for our Detachment with the theft of all our funds. But Marines and friends of Marines have come through with donations and we are getting back on our feet slowly but surely. We will survive as a Detachment, which is what Marines do best.

I like to personally thank Daniel Levin for his generous donation of $1,500 that has helped us in our recovery.

Please, one way you can help us in our recovery, check the PLM and the BOOSTERS sections in this newsletter, if you are not current, you would be helping us by supporting us that way, also several Ads are not current, the ad prices are listed below and the expiration dates are posted on your personal ads.

We are now getting ready for spring and our JROTC awards to 29 high schools, one Naval Sea Cadets and several Civil Air Patrol squadrons.

The S.E. MCL Region Convention will be held later this month in Orlando and the MCL Spring Conference will be next month in Safety Harbor and I will be attending both.

Commandant's Message for January & February 2015

I hope you and your families had a great holiday and Happy New Year.

Several members of our Detachment celebrated the Marine Corps birthday at Sharkey's Bar and Grill and at the Ball at Post 142 in Pompano Beach.

Our Detachment held a Holiday party during our December meeting, everyone brought a cover dish and a great time was had by everyone in attendance.

We welcomed in new member James Kaufman in our December meeting.

Remember, if you meet a Marine, invite him or her to join the League.

Semper-Fi, Joe Motes

Commandant's Message for November & December 2014

In the past two months, we had to have another Installation of Officers as the first one was invalidated. On October 12th we collected 24 Priority Mail boxes from the Swamp Fox Society Children of the American Revolution, to be shipped to our troops overseas.

On November 10th, Cliff Handerhan and myself attended the cake cutting ceremonies at the Sunrise V.A. clinic and later that evening at Sharkey's Raw Bar and Grill on Coral Springs, which was attended by several members from our Detachment. Cliff turned out to be the oldest in attendance.

I'm hoping we will have a Holiday party at our December meeting, it would be a covered dish, please call Adjutant Dale MacCutcheon on what you would be planning on bringing, please email her ozaginax@mac.com or call me at 954-559-3202.

I want to wish everyone a very Happy Holidays and a very Happy New Years.

Remember, if you meet a Marine, invite him or her to join the League.

Commandant's Message for September & October 2014

I like to start by wishing Marine David Collins a speedy recovery. Last month several of our members which included three WWII Marine Veterans had a nice dinner to celebrate the 70th anniversary of V-J
Day. Past Detachment Commandant Tony Gutierrez accepted our National Unit Commendation 2014 Detachment Award from National Commandant Jim Tuohy at the National Convention. This past month our Detachment personally presented three Eagle Scout certificates, and the Esprit de Corps to the Pembroke Pines Civil Air Patrol squadron. This month we will be holding our final nomination of officers and election of officers, please make an effort to attend.

We are in the planning stages for another picnic in late Fall and also having a Christmas party for our December meeting. If there are any Marines needing a ride to the meetings, please call the closest member listed on the officer roster or call me and I will put you in contact with a near-by Marine. If you meet a Marine, please invite them to our meetings.

Commandant's Message for July & August 2014

During the last two months our Detachment has been busy with end of year JROTC awards to 28 High School, including Miami Beach High School; the Commander asking us if we would award to his school as Miami-Dade schools do not receive our awards. We also awarded to the Boca Raton Civil Air Patrol and the Fort Lauderdale Naval Sea Cadets.

For the past 12 months we also awarded 50 Eagle Scout Certificates, the most of any Detachment in the State of Florida.

Now for the bad news, this month, June and next month July we with will be holding nominations again and nominations and elections in August, because our nominations and elections were not held in accordance to our By-Laws due to the Past Department Judge Advocates failure to do his job properly. More about this will be in this month's minutes. Please try and make it to this meeting if you don't want to miss the fireworks.

If there are Marine needing a ride to the meetings, please call the closest member listed on the officer roster or call me and I will put you in contact with a near-by Marine.

If you meet a Marine, please invite them to our meetings.

Commandant's Message for May & June 2014

I want to start off by thanking the Detachment for re-electing me again as your Commandant.

Last month I attended the Spring Conference in Safety Harbor on behalf of Tamarac Detachment, and I will be looking forward to the Summer Convention next month in Altamonte Springs.

The weekend of May 3rd and 4th we collected over 350 pounds of health care items along with goodies and snacks during this two day event. Also money was donated to cover the cost of shipping of these boxes to our troops in harms way. As always if anyone knows of a serviceman or woman in harms way and if you have a mailing address for them, we at Tamarac Detachment 755 would be honored to send them a care package reminding them that we at home support them and are thinking about them.

If you meet a Marine, please invite them to our meetings.

Commandant's Message for March & April 2014

It saddens me to report the death of another Past Commandant, Leonard R. Zargo, Sr. Len was Command 1993-1995.

A memorial service will  be  held on April 5th from 1pm to 4pm at the Polish American Club on Prima Vista Blvd., in Port Saint Lucie. The ceremony will probably take about 45min to an hour. Food and beverages will be catered in. Len wanted a big send off and I hope we can do it.

On March 8th our Detachment had it's first picnic in several years, we had 29 Marines, Associates, family and friends. I really want to thank every one that attended, but specially Adam Falise, James Ruggiero, Dale MacCutcheon and Marilyn Steitz for their help in making the picnic a success. Commandant's Message for January & February 2014

Well, another year has gone and now on to 2014, Happy New Year to you and your family.

Last month we lost one of our original charter member and Honorary Detachment Commandant Jacob Joseph
Mirsky who passed away on December 1st. His funeral services were very well attended by several
Detachment members. Joe Mirsky was laid to rest by his wife Lucille at the Star of David in North Lauderdale.

Wreaths Across America was held on December 14th at the South Florida V.A. National Cemetery in Lake Worth.
There was over 1000 Veterans and Youth Groups from every organizations from South Florida. 11,500 wreaths were
laid on almost all the graves in the cemetery. This is a very moving event and it would be nice to see more people in
attendance. A wreath was also laid for Joe and Lucille Mirsky.

Our Detachment Picnic is set for Saturday March 8th, people to be invite could include: perspective new MCL members,
MCL donors, Children of the American Revolution, Young Marines etc. Marilyn Steitz reported on the Troop Care Package
Drive at Our Lady of Lourdes in West Boca. May 3 - 4 was approved by the church.

Thank you very much in advance.

Commandant's Message for November & December 2013

Last month four Marines participated in the MCL Shooting Contest at Pro Bass Shops in Davie for the Marine Corps League. Jorge Bebelagua, Ramon Arriaga, Adam Falise and Joe Motes , congratulations to all.

On Saturday October 12th several members met for a luncheon and birthday party at the Bone Fish Grill in Coral Springs, a great time was had by everyone.

The Department of Florida has just sent us 82 Scholarship raffle tickets valued at $5 per book, one book per each member in our Detachment, for a total of $410. I'm asking each member to please help support the Detachment meet this quota. If you could please buy one, two, three or four books, we could accomplish this task. I have already started by buying the first 4 books. I know that not everyone in the Detachment has email, or is able to attend meeting, so I'm asking you if you can buy more than one, please mail me you check payable to the Marine Corps League and how many books you would like to buy.

I will be the first to say that this scholarship has helped my daughter in the last four years of her college. We in our Detachment will have future children or grandchildren that may be in need of help from the Department scholarship. Remember that 100% of the proceeds go to the scholarship funds given to our children.

Commandant Message for September & October 2013

The last two months have been slow due to the summer months; our last meeting in August we had another social after the meeting, something that seem to be catching with those attending the meetings. A new Young Marines has been formed in Broward, now known as South Florida Young Marines, and will be meeting every other Saturday in Pembroke Pines.

Jessica Operle is now running the Ship's Store and doing a GREAT job with sales; Jessica is also planning another luncheon at Bonefish Grill for Oct. 12th; Sr. Vice Commandant Falise had not yet received feedback from any corporations or companies regarding donations to our Detachment for Poker Night.

I would like to make our meeting for interesting and fun, as the socials are really catching on, if anyone has ideas on what extras you would like to see, please send me an email detailing your ideas. Congratulation to Lou Annacone who celebrated his 88th birthday on July 30th.

Remember, if you meet a Marine, tell them about us, they just might be interested and join.

Commandant Message for July & August 2013

I must start off by saying we have lost three members, Cathy Pacini who will always remain in our hearts, Louis Gesualdo and William Eckerth . Our May meeting was short and followed by a social with Pizza. Our next social will be after our August meeting, with covered dish. Dale MacCutcheon will make the arrangements, so please let her know what you would like to bring. Our next meeting after that will be our Christmas party December 12th.

This past June 28th, Brandon Gac, Jessica Operle and myself did a complete clean up and inventory of our storage facilities and rifles. I thank Brandon and Jessica for their help in this endeavor.

Cliff and I attended the Golden Age games in Buffalo NY., and congratulations to Cliff for winning the Silver Medal in Shooting.

At our May meeting the detachment voted to donate every year $219 to the Wounded Warriors Project.

Our school program came to an end with 27 High Schools JROTC Battalions, 4 Civil Air Patrol Squadrons and the Naval Sea Cadets were awarded our JROTC Sprit de Corps Medals.

In June both Tony Gutierrez and I attended the Summer Convention in Orlando, our Detachment was awarded the Detachment Meritorious Unit Commendation (Department Level) and the Boy Scout Certificate of Appreciation for awarding more than 40 Eagle Scout certificates during 2012-2013.

Sr. Vice Commandant Adam Falise is working on scheduling a picnic in the next few months. Historian Jessica Operle is planning a luncheon for the 3rd Saturday in July at a location to me announced.

Remember, if you meet a Marine, tell them about us, they just might be interested and join.

Commandant Message for May & June 2013

A new year with a new elected staff full of ideas and some new young blood. As your newly elected Commandant I wish to thank the membership in entrusting me as your Commandant. During the past several weeks I have spoken with the staff and members to put together a game plan in thing we would like to do.

The ten week club in under way and we are search for locations to have the rose program. Three times a year we will conduct short meetings and having a dinner social gathering following the meeting, We may be asking members to bring a covered dish or take a collection the month before and order food from outside.

Things we are considering doing are, a SOS Breakfast, Spaghetti Dinner. Outdoor BBQ and dinner night out. We are currently seeking bids to host the 2014 Spring Conference.

Having a Marine Corps Birthday party and a Holiday party in December.

Joe Motes, Commandant

Commandant Message for March & April 2013

Marines of the Tamarac Detachment, it's that time of the year again, Ladies and Gentlemen for electing a staff to lead our Detachment in the coming year 2013-2014. These next two meetings will be crucial to the Life of the Detachment. If there are no members willing and able to serve in the elected and appointed positions, then there is nobody to carry out the Mission of the Detachment of the League and the Detachment will lose its Charter by default. It's pretty simple, if No Members volunteer to do the Work, no Detachment. Thus far there have been 3 nominations. Myself having accepted to run for a 3rd term because our Senior Vice Commandant Joe Motes will be moving out of town and no other member has been nominated as of yet to serve as Commandant. Marine Brandon Gac one of our newer members was nominated for Senior Vice Commandant and willingly accepted and Marine Gad Afalo has been nominated for Judge Advocate and has willingly accepted. There is a current opening for Junior Vice Commandant and numerous appointed positions are in need of your responsible participation. What I need as your Commandant is for you, the card carrying members of this Detachment to act like members. I need you to show up and act like Members and do the work necessary to carry out our Mission as Marines and members if the Marine Corps League. Your presence and involvement at the next two meetings is very crucial. The Life of Our Detachment depends on it. Our Meeting nights have changed to the 2nd Thursday of every month at the same location the American Legion Hall #157 on Mears Parkway in Margate at 7:30pm. That will be March 14th & April 11, 2013. Please Attend.

Also our Detachment will have a Color Guard marching in the St. Patrick Day Parade on March 16, 2013 at 9:30am in Margate at the Oriole Gardens Community. And we will be hosting a Troop Care Package Drive again at Our Lady of Lords R.C. Church in Boca Raton, Lyons Rd. and Palmetto Park Road, on Saturday, April 13th from 3pm-6pm and Sunday, the 14th of April from 8am-12pm.

The MCL Department of Florida will be holding its Spring Conference at the Safety Harbor Resort & Spa, which is in the Tampa area of Florida that same weekend April 12-13 offering an Excellent Leadership School Professional Development Course on Friday April 12th for any members interested in attending.

Please attend our meetings, purchase your Scholarship raffle tickets, patronize our advertisers and supporters and remember everyone is a Recruiter.

Commandant Message for January & February 2013

It is my Sad Duty to report on the death of Marine Robert Pastor who was a Charter member of our Detachment and passed on November 23rd, and Marine Carl Crouch also a Tamarac Detachment member who attended our meetings regularly and was an Iwo Jima veteran He passed on November 27th. The Detachment provided to both Marines Honor and Respect and to their families with the Eagle, Globe & Anchor remembrance ceremony at their Funerals.

I hope you have all enjoyed the Holidays. It's always a busy time of the year for everyone with seemingly not enough time in each day of this season to get everything we would like to do done. I hope everyone's mission has been accomplished with no casualty to our health or fortune.

We're coming into our second half of the year and there's much work ahead to be done. As mentioned previously our Department Scholarship allotment of raffle tickets have been received and need to be sold. There is a $5.00 book of chances for each member of the Detachment. So It would be appreciated if you are a member of the Detachment that You purchase your lot even if you don't attend the meetings you can call, mail or email myself or any other Detachment Officer to make arrangements to purchase and support the Scholarship Program. Our Troop Care Package Program will be having a Drive at Our Lady of Lords in Boca Raton on April 14th & 15th 2013 sign up to volunteer we need your participation. Also beginning in April we will have our JROTC Awards presentations to 28 Schools JROTC Programs, 3 Civil Air Patrol Units and the Broward Sea Cadets. Think about being the Marine volunteering to make the presentation of these awards to One or Some of these Units. It is an Honor and a Privilege to do so.

Still in the Planning would be a Picnic or Mess Night for the Spring after the Installation of New Officers. If any member is interested in heading off the planning committee for one if these please attend our upcoming meetings and let us know.

I'll close for now and look toward to seeing you at our future meetings. Remember everyone is a Recruiter sign up a neighbor or friend and help our Detachment grow.
